How can you encapsulate the life and legacy of Vivienne Westwood—a chief genius in England’s vogue canon and much, a great deal far more besides—in a memorial services? As her granddaughter, Cora Corré, conceded in the last deal with of this afternoon’s celebration at Southwark Cathedral: “We can only definitely contact on the features of the phenomenon that is Vivienne Westwood: a grandmother, a mom, a sister, a good friend, a teacher, an artist, a designer—it will under no circumstances be sufficient.”
From loved ones to manner by means of punk and protest, there was a good deal of floor to cover in this 90-moment celebration of Westwood, who handed absent in December. And but there had been also nicely-judged moments that served as reflective punctuation marks—allowing it all to sink in—provided through some especially gorgeous performances. A person was from Nick Cave, who sat marvelously saturnine at the piano to sing “Into My Arms” with painfully psychological precision. One more was from Chrissie Hynde, who, accompanied by a guitarist, sent Buddy Holly’s “Raining in My Heart” reduced and pure.
The attendees who arrived to keep in mind Westwood reflected her loaded and various development via life. Then came Andreas Kronthaler, Westwood’s spouse. Movingly, he advised two stories about his wife, 1 from possibly side of their time jointly. The very first was from 1988, when he was a university student of vogue in Vienna and she was his instructor and they started their partnership. He recalled using her on an illicit early day to see the city’s best Outdated Master paintings. When he picked Westwood up, he recalled: “She looked a feeling. She wore a chocolate brown extend-velvet catsuit. A scarf draped about her hip. Her rocking-horse shoes. A leopard bogus fur in pink. And her curls, in orange.” At the Kunsthistorisches he confirmed her his favorite Velázquez and then a Rubens—an impression of which was on the tie he was donning as he spoke to us from the pulpit. As Westwood was looking at the painting, recalled Kronthaler: “I seemed at her and understood that she was my darling woman and I would be with her permanently.”
